How Your Social Media Looks Amateur
I run a lot of free audits for businesses; checking how their social media is performing. There are a few easy things that you may be doing that show me the person managing the account is
New
Never managed a business page before
Doesn't care
Not taking the investment seriously.
Before I jump into the things I notice I want to specify this was written in September of 2026. If you are reading this early 2027, things may have changed.
Hashtags
If you are still using hashtags on in-feed posts on Facebook- you don't know what you're doing.
I just tested this, again, by using #LeClaire on Facebook. This is a small town in Iowa where we are located. When I hit search, Facebook showed me multiple posts where Le Claire is mentioned in the text but not hashtaged anywhere.
Hashtags have a place in Facebook Groups, but even then, most users are not searching hashtags in that way any more. Meta has focused captions similar to SEO (search engine optimization) so as long as you have the text you want to show up for in your caption, you have a better chance of showing up.
Links in the Caption
Meta is a for-profit company.
When you use a link in your caption, you are telling Meta you want their users to go to some other site. This essentially means less ad revenue for them, right? So, when you put a link in your caption, Meta will punish you by hindering your organic reach. If you want to boost the post, that's fine, but if every post you make has a link you are removing tons of reach for the business. Less reach means less people learning about your business. Less reach also means higher paid social bills when we have to boost every bit of content. Add all that to what you may be paying a social media manager? This number is getting really high!
AI Created Content
Did you know that over 30% of Gen Z finds AI content to be "disconnected"? That's according to IAB.

This report was made in January of this year. From public perspective, we are assuming this has gone even more negative in both generations.
Copyrighted/Trendy Music
You know it's illegal to use copyrighted material to promote your business, right? So, when you are using trending audio or other popular songs in your marketing, you could be getting a lawsuit. Not only could you lose your page due to a copyright strike, but the lawsuits could take a decent chunk of change out of your pocket. Read more here: Copyrighted Music Not So Trendy After All
The Same One Liker on All Posts
If you don't get a lot of engagement on a post, it's pretty easy to start finding a pattern in who is responding to the content. Most of the time, I can find out specifically who is running your social media based on who always likes a post. There's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes, we get a generic comment like "Great! <3" or "Cool!" and "Awesome!" under every post from that same person... That starts to look fake. This is trying to help boost engagement stats rather than showing real conversation happening due to the post. This is also a clear sign of someone using an Engagement Group to farm engagement from people not interested in your services.
